Welcome Back!!

Hello everyone, and welcome back! Thank you so much for stopping by, whether you are joining us for the first time this year, or if this is your second year on Team Coleman's Crew, we are so glad to have you and feel incredibly grateful for your love and support! Time is flying by, and I cannot believe almost a year has passed since our very first CureSearch walk! Last year, my brother Coleman faced many challenges, and he fought through months and months of chemotherapy and radiation. Today, I feel eternally grateful and incredibly blessed to say that we have him in good health. It brings me so much peace and gratitude to know he is just a regular kid again. He played on the varsity football team this year at NDP, and will be playing basketball too. He gets to be a regular junior in high school; we never knew how much we would appreciate the gift of being able to be a "regular" kid doing things like homework, going to football practice, and having to get up early every day and put on a uniform to go to high school.

Our entire family was changed by cancer. If there was one thing I could choose to be removed from the world entirely forever, it would be cancer. There are many things this word needs to be rid of-violence, hate, discrimination, injustice- but cancer is the one thing I would pick. Cancer does not discriminate. Cancer attacks the rich and the poor, men and women, the very old and the incredibly young, those who are religious and those who are not, people who are filled with hate and people who embody compassion and love. I firmly believe that no person, under any circumstances, should ever have to experience cancer in their lives.

I am blessed to have a family who is strong and loving. When cancer comes into the lives of those you love, you have to bear down and come together. In that instant, you are able to see the trivial things in life so clearly, as if they have all been highlighted. Things that do not matter are set aside. The most important things become your sole and only focus. Cancer hit too close to home last year. I lost one of my best friends, Ann LaFond, who was also one of the most incredible women this world has ever known. I have seen the fight against cancer through the eyes of friend, sister, and granddaughter. I am blessed to say that my little brother and my grandmother, who were both diagnosed in August 2010, are in good health right now. Being able to say that means more to me than I will ever be able to adequately describe in words. I am eternally grateful for their health and pray everyday that their good health continues.

This year will be our second walk with CureSearch for Children's Cancer. Our last walk, on February 26, 2011, was a huge success but a very trying day for me. The day of our walk happened to be just one day after I lost my friend Ann to cancer. It was difficult because all the people at this walk either have had a child with cancer who lost their battle or have a child who is currently fighting or is in remission. The love and support and mutual understanding of the struggle it is to have a family member with cancer, especially one with is just a child, is palpable when you there. This support can be felt, but words never have to be uttered. It is an unspoken understanding of the pain involved, and the hope we all have for a future that does not include cancer. Last year, Coleman's Crew was not only the biggest team at the walk, but we also raised the most money! I am absolutely sure that our February 12, 2012 walk will be even more successful than the last one!

Please make use of the links at the top of this page. Make sure to register with Coleman's Crew on the CureSearch website. This link can also be found at the top of the page. Directions for how to register (although it isn't too difficult without directions) can be found on our Facebook event page (there is a link for this at the top too). I will write another post soon explaining how to register for anyone who would rather read it here than on the Facebook event page. Feel free to invite anyone to come with you- family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, kids, parents, whoever! As always, contact me via email at: krehorn@asu.edu if you have absolutely ANY questions. I would be more than happy to help you and answer any questions you may have.

I will always be a strong activist in the cancer community. Once you are a part of it, it isn't something you ever really leave. You meet many incredible people, and they become a part of a "family" of sorts. I will always keep fighting on behalf of my own family, friends, and the many people I have met through this tough journey. Thank you for being a part of our team!

Coleman's Crew definitely rocked it, we were the highest individual fundraiser as well as highest overall fundraiser for the entire event! Sorry it has taken so long to post this.. I will post one picture tonight with more to come in the future. I will continue to run this blog so I can update you about Coleman and about next years walk! Thank you all again! I am so blessed to have had such an amazing experience and to have shared it with all of you!

Walk Tomorrow

The walk is finally here! See you all tomorrow morning for Check-In between 8:00-8:30 a.m. The Opening Ceremony/Walk will be at 9:00 a.m. Tomorrow, I walk for every person, adult and child, who was ever diagnosed with cancer. I walk for those who are now angels in Heaven. I walk for those who are fighting their battle here on earth, and I walk for those who are in remission. I walk for the families who's lives have changed because of cancer. I am not sure, but I think there will be a balloon release for those of us who have lost family, friends, and loved ones to cancer. If there is one, you all should do that. I will release one for Ellie Potvin, a little girl who lost her battle with rhabdomyosarcoma in June 2010. I will also release a balloon for one of my best friends, Ann, who lost her battle with cancer today. Tomorrow is a very important day for me on many levels. It is going to be a very emotional day.. lots of mixed emotions. I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for joining my family and I on this journey, this walk is going to be amazing. Your love, prayers, and participation mean so much for me, there are no words to express my gratitude and love. See you all tomorrow!

An older post reblogged, good information

Q: When and where is the walk?
A: The walk is on Saturday, February 26, 2011. It will start at Kiwanis Park-North Soccer Field, located at West Baseline Rd. & South Ash, Tempe, AZ 85282. Registration and Check-In will be at 8:00 am (NOTE: If you register online it will make the walk day much easier for the team leader AND yourself! All you will have to do is show up, find Kassie and/or Susan Rehorn, and we will get everyone checked-in. Registering for the walk on the walk day is absolutely acceptable, we welcome everyone to come out and raise awareness for childhood cancer, but online registration will make walk day a ton less hectic). The Opening Ceremony and Walk will be at 9:00 am.

Q: Will I have to pay to participate in this walk? Am I required to raise money on my own for the walk?
A: The only payment you will need to make is a $10.00 Walkers' Registration Fee, which you will pay when you register online. It is easiest to register online and pay the Walkers' Registration Fee online too. Everyone who has signed up so far has had no trouble using the online registration process and payment section. You are not required to raise any money, although you are certainly allowed to do so if you would like! Again, all you are accountable for paying for is the $10.00 Walkers' Registration Fee, which you will pay when you register with our team (Coleman's Crew) and registration should take only a couple of minutes online.

Q: Can I bring a friend or group of people with me to the walk?
A: ABSOLUTELY! We encourage you to bring friends, family, and co-workers to the walk, we would love to have each and every one of you on Coleman's Crew for the walk! Just make sure that if you plan to bring a guest, you have them register online and pay the $10.00 Walkers' Registration Fee as well.

Q: How long is the walk?
A: The walk is a 5k which is just barely over 3 miles. It is a WALK not a RACE, we will be walking at a leisurely pace.

Q: What should I wear to the walk?
A: Wear comfortable clothes that are weather appropriate. Wear shoes that are good for walking in. We will be distributing Coleman's Crew t-shirts on the morning of the walk, so you can wear the t-shirts over whatever you came to the walk wearing. The t-shirts will be of no cost to you.

Q: How can I ensure that I get a t-shirt for the walk?
A: REGISTER ONLINE ASAP and then send Kassie Rehorn an email at: krehorn@asu.edu that includes your name, cell phone number, email address, and most importantly, your t-shirt size. Most likely we will be buying bigger sizes to ensure that they will fit pretty much everyone, even if they are a bit big on some people. Please do not email me with your t-shirt size if you have not yet registered for the walk. Register first, then email Kassie with your information.

Q: Can I promote the walk and spread the word about it?
A: YES! YES! YES! Let me know if you need information on the walk. If you have a large group you want to send it out to, drop me and email: krehorn@asu.edu and I will email you back with all the information you need to send out to people.

Q: Where do I go to register for the walk?
A: Go to the following link: http://www.curesearchwalk.org/faf/search/searchTeamPart.asp?ievent=426005&lis=1&kntae426005=CD98ABC3DC6140DCA21137F902E4249B&team=3957432
(When you click on this link, you should be taken to the Coleman's Crew Team Page. You will see the words "Join Our Team" in green, click there and start the simple and quick registration process!)

Thank you for your interest and participation! Remember, ANY QUESTIONS AT ALL WILL BE ANSWERED (and they will be answered quickly! :) JUST EMAIL KASSIE REHORN: krehorn@asu.edu

Happy Tuesday!

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday everyone! It is Tuesday, February 22, 2011! Coleman's Crew did have a "suggested" registration deadline of Monday, February 21, 2011 because it helped Susan and I (the organizers of our walk team) to get all of our numbers right, figure out how many t-shirts we will need, etc. IF YOU HAVE YET TO SIGN UP, NOT TO WORRY-YOU CAN STILL SIGN UP! However, if you intend to sign up for the walk, do so AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Please register, and you are more than welcome to have your friends and family members join to, we would love to have all of you!

>>>READ THIS: It has been brought to my attention that when registering for the walk on the CureSearch website, some people have had trouble when trying to enter their credit card information. A few people have had the website reject their credit card payment. First, don't worry, your credit card works just fine, it is a website glitch. Second, if you have tried multiple times, LET ME KNOW. I will register online for you & I will pay your registration fee. Just please give me $10.00 in cash on walk day to pay me back for the fee. <<<<<<<

Thank you all so much for your continued love, support, and prayers.. that is the greatest gift and blessing of all! I am SO EXCITED for this walk to actually happen, I have been working on it and anxiously awaiting it since October 2010! When someone you love is diagnosed with cancer, you feel helpless. All you want to do is be able to take their cancer away, to find a way to ensure that they don't have to feel pain.. but unfortunately those are things that you cannot do (believe me, if I could, I would do it in a heartbeat!) Something I CAN DO though, even if it is just a tiny gesture, is to participate in this walk. For me, this walk has been an outlet. A way of standing up to cancer, to let it know that we will not back down. I can't take the cancer away, but this walk is something I CAN DO! Thank you all so much for your support!
God Bless!

Once again, the walk will take place on Saturday, February 26, 2011. Registration and Check-In will begin at 8:00 am on 2/26/11. The Opening Ceremony and Walk will begin at 9:00 am. On Walk Day your job is simple-just show up at by 8:00 am and find Coleman's Crew (we are a pretty BIG group, you wont be able to miss us-just look for Susan Rehorn and/or Kassie Rehorn). Lucky for all of us, since you have registered to walk online, all we have to do is get you checked in for the walk-super easy! Once we have you checked in, we will give you a Coleman's Crew t-shirt to wear for the walk! We are having them made right now, and the t-shirt will not cost you anything.

Coleman's Crew will walk as a group. The walk is 5k, which to my understanding is just over 3 miles. It is a WALK not a RACE, so don't worry, we will be walking at a leisurely pace.. the point of this event really isn't the walk itself, but rather people from all around Phoenix coming together to show their support for every child diagnosed and their families, and to let cancer know that WE WILL NOT BACK DOWN, WE WILL FIGHT TO FIND A CURE! This walk means a lot to me and to my family, and I am sure it also means a great deal to countless other families that will be there this coming Saturday. Your support and love is greatly appreciated, and WE ARE SO BLESSED TO HAVE ALL OF YOU OUT THERE TO SUPPORT US AS WE WALK FOR A BETTER FUTURE FOR ALL CHILDREN!

The walk is going to start at: Kiwanis Park (at the North Soccer Field)
West Baseline Rd. & South Ash
Tempe, Arizona 85282
(this is the address given on the CureSearch website)

The exact address of Kiwanis Park given by Kiwanis Park Website is:
6111 South All-American Way
Tempe, Arizona 85283

I hope everyone is having a good week. This post is my first post that is unrelated to Coleman's Crew, but it is very much important. Once you have a family member with cancer, specifically when that family member is only a kid, you are adopted into a "community" of sorts through social networking. A community that prays for one another, offers support and courage, and positive thoughts. The people (often complete strangers) that you meet become an internet family of sorts.

There is a little girl named Kate McRae. I started "following" the PrayforKate Twitter account when I first heard her story through one of my friends' blog posts. Kate is an adorable little girl that has bravely fought cancer. I didn't realize until recently that Kate lives in Chandler, Arizona, and goes to Phoenix Children's Hospital, just like my brother does. Yesterday her parents wrote a CaringBridge post asking for all those in the community to pray for Kate. They found out a few days ago that her cancer is back.

Complete strangers, people who I don't even know have prayed for me. They have kept my little brother in their thoughts in prayers, all out of the goodness of their hearts. There are people who live in states very far from Arizona who put my little brother on the "Prayer Wall" of their child's local gymnastics center, where they post those who need a prayer, that way anyone that comes by can see that and pray for them. People I have never met, never asked anything from, have done acts of kindness both small and large, expecting nothing in return. First, I would like to thank those people if they happen to see this, and if not, I hope that I have expressed my utmost gratitude to them.
So having said that, I beg you all to stop sometime today, and say a prayer for Kate McRae and her family. I believe in the power of prayer, I believe in the power of faith, love, and positivity. We may not be able to take away a child's cancer simply by prayer (although we all sure wish we could.. and I will never give up on miracles!), but I do know that the power of prayer can only help. And it is in tough times like these that we need to extend our help to others, simply because it is the right thing to do. I know that my life is richer and more full because there is faith in it. So I am making sure to say a prayer for Kate. Sometimes we encounter situations in life that seem insurmountable.. it is in times like these that I simply have to take a deep breath, look for the silver lining, and give it to God.

Thank you so much for reading, and God bless.

Sincerely,
Kassie Rehorn

Welcome to Coleman's Crew!

Welcome! Whether it is your first time visiting our "Homepage" or you are a returning visitor, we appreciate you stopping by to get more information on Coleman's Crew. Feel free to look through all of our posts for all the details for the 2011 Phoenix CureSearch Walk for Childhood Cancer! We are so appreciative of all the help, prayers, love, and support that we have been getting, it truly means a lot! If you have absolutely any comments, questions, or concerns, please drop me and email at krehorn@asu.edu and I will get back to you within thirty minutes of your email being sent-guaranteed! Thank you so much for your interest, have a wonderful week!
Sincerely,
Kassie Rehorn

p.s. I was thrilled to discover how many "hits" this blog was getting. It is the easiest way for me to distribute walk information to the many participants (Coleman's Crew Members!!) who will be walking with us on February 26, 2011. When I first created this blog I had no idea that it would catch on and get as many "visits" as it actually has. Please be assured that I have gone through each and every post to make sure all information is user friendly. I went through every post again today to make sure that all content is family friendly as well. I want this blog to be easy to use and appropriate for all of our walk members, regardless of age! Once again, if you have absolutely any comments, questions, concerns, or any feedback, drop me an email at krehorn@asu.edu and I will get back to you within just 30 minutes of you sending the email. Thank you for the support!

WOW. Feeling very blessed, grateful, and humbled. To date, my personal fundraising page for Coleman's Crew has raised $2,045.00, collectively as a team, Coleman's Crew has raised $3,830.00... the entire Phoenix division of this walk (meaning every team participating in the PHX walk) has raised a total of $5,666.00. We've raised 67% of the money for entire walk. No words to describe my gratitude and deep appreciation. Thank you all so much.

Copy of Today's CaringBridge Post: 2/2/11

Happy 16th Birthday, Coleman!!

Today our baby turns 16. Most kids are jumping up and down - begging to get to the DMV for their license. Coleman has asked for a 16th birthday do-over....because yesterday we admitted him for round #6 of chemo. Many of you recall that Groundhog's Day when Coleman enter our world at Las Vegas Sunrise Hospital. Never in our wildest dreams did we think we'd be where we are today...having been through, witness, felt and journeyed this path. We are so very blessed to have such a strong and courageous son!

We celebrated birthday's this past Sunday. Kassie turned 20 on 1/28 and Grandma Mary's birthday was this past Monday. Grandma Joanie and Grandpa Ed were at our house, as was Randy. The whole family celebrated together. (Picture posted is of Kassie and Coleman from Sunday - birthday kids!)

This morning, I am taking Dunkin Donuts - in honor of Coleman's birth - to the nurses on the cancer floor of Phoenix Children's Hospital. They are amazing, wonderful beings! And, it doesn't get much better than Dunkin Donuts!

The best gift that Coleman is receiving is that he has only ONE more treatment after this!! Round #7 is scheduled for the week of 2/21. And, God willing, it will be his last. On February 26th, the Phoenix Children's CancerCure Walk is happening. We have a team formed - Coleman's Crew. Please consider joining our team. Kassie is our team Captain. We are making t-shirts for everyone who is participating in our walk. Even if you are unable to walk or are out of town, please consider making a donation. It's a $10 entry fee. Here is Kassie's blog address - http://colemans-crew.blogspot.com/

We are at Phoenix Children's (PCH) until Friday. I promise to update you when we bring Coleman home. Until then, I ask that you whisper, sing, yell, tell, whatever...a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY, COLEMAN!!!

Thank you for all of your support, encouragement, prayers, notes, and friendship. Our hearts are touched deeply!!

Love, hugs and hope to you!!

Susan

My brother Coleman and I celebrated our birthdays on Sunday, January 31, 2011. My birthday was on 1/28 and his is tomorrow, 2/2. He turns 16 tomorrow! We celebrated on Sunday because he will be spending the next week (including his 16th birthday) in the hospital getting chemotherapy.

He is my hero. Such an incredibly strong, faithful, and positive person. Keep up the hard work, you are almost done! C.F. #84 BRING THE PAIN.

EXCITED!

Excited that some students from Notre Dame Preparatory High School (Coleman's school) will be out there on the walk day to walk with us as a part of Coleman's Crew. Students of NDP WILL RECEIVE CHRISTIAN SERVICE HOURS FOR THIS, I believe 2-to-1. More information will be released ASAP.

Coleman's Crew Team Statistics (so far!)

So far, Coleman's Crew is the highest fundraising and participating team for the 2011 CureSearch Walk for Childhood Cancer. We have raised $2,860 and we have roughly 28 people attending the walk so far. All together, the Phoenix division of this walk has raised $4,576. That means the Coleman's Crew has raised almost more than half of what every team in Phoenix combined has raised so far!!

Good job Coleman's Crew members, and thank you so much for your support so far! Please continue to spread the word and help us raise awareness and money to find a cure for childhood cancer! Another note, lets make the Phoenix walk their best CureSearch walk in history! CureSearch walks go around the entire country. Just the other day I was watching a video of a recent walk in another state, that state's walk raised over $100,00. That made me feel a little bummed out that the Phoenix walk is one of the biggest cities in the United States yet cannot gather enough supporters to join an amazing cause and come together to help put an end to childhood cancer. I cannot be greedy though. Our numbers here for the Phoenix walk may be small, but they are mighty. What matters most is that we are gathering the support of family, friends, and even strangers, and each and every one of them is helping us to ensure that future generations of children can have a childhood free of cancer. Please help us spread the word! Join Coleman's Crew! (: Thank you so much and God bless!
